Road Barn Farm, Wendover

THE HS2 HISTORIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROJECT

The roadside gable end of Road Barn Farm Road Barn Farm is one mile south of Wendover, directly beside the A413 towards
Great Missenden. This was
built as a turnpike road in the years after 1751.

Our survey indicated that the farm buildings date from the late 18th century, making it likely that the farm took its name from the newly built turnpike.

The revised route of the proposed HS2, published in January 2012, shows that
the high-speed rail line would pass directly through Road
Barn Farm in order to cross the A413 on a 35ft-high viaduct. The farmhouse and all its buildings would be demolished to make way for this.

Research showed that the history of the farm ties together threads from Wendover's medieval open fields, the building of the turnpike, the enclosure of 1795, the Rothschild purchases of the 19th century ad the agricultural decline of the 20th. The historic value of the farm buildings themselves was less easy to assess because of overgrowth.
