THE COLLECTION
The Society’s library, housed in the County Museum on Church Street, Aylesbury, contains a comprehensive collection of books and pamphlets on Buckinghamshire. Subjects covered include:
- local, social, political, religious and natural history,
- archaeology,
- architecture,
- biography,
- heraldy
- and genealogy.
There are also some general books on relevant topics together with a collection of archaeological and historical journals, many of which are not found elsewhere in the county.
THE ARCHIVES
In addition there is a collection of older, more valuable books, housed in the Muniment Room, together with other archive material in the form of:
- sale catalogues,
- election material,
- maps,
- prints
- and transcripts of parish records.
We also have a collection of papers by Buckinghamshire antiquarians, including George Lipscomb's original notebooks for his ‘History and Antiquities of the County of Buckingham’. This collection includes the notebooks of former members of the society, ranging from transcriptions of medieval Pipe Rolls to structural surveys of surviving historical buildings.

USING THE LIBRARY FOR RESEARCH
The library collection and archives are available for historical research and are used regularly both by members of the society, academic researchers and interested members of the public.
Visiting the Library and Archives is by appointment in advance. This ensures that we can locate and prepare the documents you may wish to research. Our phone number and eMail address are at the head of this page.
For many years the society was the county's only repository for archives, but during the 20th century many hundreds of medieval and post-medieval manorial records, deeds, court rolls, parish records, estate maps and other original documents were transferred to the county record office, now the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. So before visiting the Library is is worth contacting:
to check the location of the class of documents and publications which you may wish to consult.

WHEN THE LIBRARY IS OPEN
The Library and Muniment Room are generally open by appointment to members of the Society and the general public on Wednesdays between 10.00am and 4.00pm when the Librarian/Archivist is available to help with enquiries.
BUCKINGHAMSHIRE IN PRINT
The society has also published a wide range of books, articles and reproductions about the history of the county. These include the Buckinghamshire Papers series, a reproduction of the Jeffreys and Bryant maps of the county and a collection of historic views, back issues of Records of Buckinghamshire, and copies of offprints of articles. All are available for sale from the Library.
